The Deepest Step Well in the World ...... Chand Baori

Chand Baroi is an ancient step well located at Abhaneri Village..... in Rajasthan. This is one of the deepest step well found in India and is around 100ft(30 stories) deep. The breathtaking Architectural beauty of this is about 1000 years old....and is well far beyond words. The well is covered in 3500 steps which is surrounded by 3 sides... the fourth side has a pavilion and a resting room.. It is beautifully decorated and sculpted. This well was built by The King Chand of Nikumba dynasty in between 800 to 900 A.D.
The well not only acted as a reliable water source in the arid region of Rajasthan but also acted as ideal place for community gathering during months of intense heat. The temperature near the bottom of the well remains 5 degrees cooler. The wide mouth of the well made it suitable for water harvesting. Architecturally beautiful step wells are mostly found in the dry regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan.Chand Baori was featured in the movie The Fall and also made a small appearance in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises.
It is one of the most overlooked landmarks in the country. It is one of the oldest stepwell in Rajasthan, and is considered to be among the biggest in the world. Chand Baori looks like anything but a well. The King provided the surrounding areas with a dependable water source for centuries before modern water delivery systems were introduced. As the green water at the base attests, the well is no longer in use, but it makes for an interesting stop-over to an architecturally impressive structure that is over 1000 years old.The well is now a treasure managed by the Archeological Survey of India.
